On May 3 Local 16 held its first ever Daily Hire (DH) meeting. The purpose was to give our DH members an opportunity to bring their questions, issues, and concerns directly to the attention of Local 16 officers.

Local 16 President Gene Maxwell, Vice-President Jim Joyce, Secretary-Treasurer Rich Gelber, Daily Hire Committee Chair Paul Vasquez and Communications Committee Chair Brendan Black were there, along with nineteen DH members and one staff member.

The bulk of the meeting concerned the current negotiations (bargaining resumes on Monday May 21) in general and specific bargaining issues of concern to our DH community.

We also discussed the Strike Authorization vote, its procedures, and meaning for bargaining.

After the discussion of bargaining the floor was opened to questions.

Many subjects were raised including:

Health care
Vacation
Work opportunities
New technologies and the possible impact on employment
NABET's future
Payment In Lieu of Benefits (PILOB)

We also had some additional discussions of bargaining related issues including,
our overall strategy for the negotiations and our media strategy specifically.

We view this meeting as a success but only a beginning. We are committed to building a strong long term relationship with our DH members. A relationship where NABET andÊour members both benefit.

To that end, Local 16 is once again seeking individual DH members to be part of a DH Committee.
Its purpose is to be the conduit for all our DH members to the leadership of Local 16. Four members at this meeting agreed to serve on the committee. Others are welcome, and frankly, the more members who volunteer for this committee the better it will be able to be to serve the membership.
