The 2009 CWA Women's Conference was held in St. Louis, MO. Kathy Henry and I represented Local 16 at the event. While there, we participated in various activities and informational seminars. There were many highlights: member networking, investigating new communication technologies, healthcare reform, womens health issues, money management, political activism, and a series of monologues pertaining to "Strong Women, Past and Present" , which were written and performed by CWA members. We met many people and learned that CWA represents a very diverse community of members (police, healthcare, media, publishing, education, and the airline industry, to name a few). We also discussed newer technologies, such as Twitter, Facebook and MySpace, which can be used to communicate with other members and with the public.
The members wrote letters to their local representatives in support of HR 3200, citing personal experiences and the need for reform. Literature and speakers were provided regarding women's health issues, money management, and political activism. The presentation "Strong Women, Past and Present" highlighted women throughout history who were very influential in making changes in society.
We greatly enjoyed this conference and met many members and groups that we hope to work with in the future. One of those groups is "Dress for Success" (DFS). "Dress for Success" is an international organization that provides professional clothing and lifetime support to women seeking employment. They have mentoring programs to assist women in entering the workplace and in building careers. During the conference we were asked to donate items (handbags, costume jewelry, new and gently used professional clothing) and collected over 200 items. We will be contacting them soon to set up a donation from NABET 16.
